10 Home Trends You Should Definitely Get Rid of in 2017

This metal can certainly bring a shiny appeal to your home, but resist the overkill we witnessed in 2016. If you love this look, try mixing metals instead (by, say, incorporating brass fittings next to an oil-rubbed bronze faucet), or by only using small brass accents.

Perhaps one too many Brooklyn eateries followed this trend, or designers simply became bored in general with the industrial decor theme, but old-fashioned hanging bulbs are out. Instead, try retro lighting that speaks to you and fits with your home decor theme, like a vintage Murano glass chandelier. 

Instead of flawlessly white interiors, 2017 will flaunt rooms accented with navy fabrics or moody blues. Navy is the new face of modern design, and adds a bit of warmth and freshness to clinical rooms that formerly could pass as "contemporary." 

A boxy item here and there is fine, but 2017 will be the year rounded edges and circular furniture return. "We're taking the edge off," says Patti Carpenter, a global trend ambassador and founder of carpenter + company. "It's all about finding a place of calm and comfort in this constant chaos and information that we constantly have coming at us." In short: Home will be about comfort in 2017 — not edginess. 

Don't get us wrong: A good DIY is a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon. But when everything from your lighting to your toothbrush holder is a DIY, it's time to do a home cleanse. In 2017, design will turn away from "easy" and "quick" crafts and toward artisanal work instead, and we'll see the return of projects that take a high skill level (no offense to your glue gun) like glass blowing and porcelain work, according to Carpenter. 

As part of the overall "sayonara" to the industrial decor trend in 2017, burnished metals are on their way out. Warmer, shinier metals like bronze or gold will take their place. 

In 2017, home design will be all about texture. That may mean updating the definition of "modern," which typically refers to rooms that are smooth, sleek and — for lack of a better word — flat at times. Modern design in 2017 will incorporate chunky stitches, pleats, folds and other textural, warm items that help you connect to the room on an emotional level, says Carpenter.

Space is becoming more important to homeowners than ever, so you may want to reconsider that giant plush couch. Oversized furniture will exit in 2017, and more space-efficient furniture will take its place. 

Designers are turning away from the zigzag pattern of Chevron — especially prints that have only two to three colors, which can sometimes look cheap or two-dimensional. (But, obviously, the corgi can stay.)
