Whether you’re springing for a totally new paint job, want to reapply a color you already love, or are looking to do touchups on a home you just moved into, it's helpful to know exactly what colors have been used in a room. One clever person shared a way to ensure you never forget what colors you use again—and it simply involves writing the info on the back of your switch plate.

The Instagram account @farmhousefanatics shared a photo of the trick someone used to remember the exact type of paint they applied to their kitchen. “I repainted my kitchen and trim, so I wrote on the inside of a wall plate the colors and brand used, the year and room,” Wendy Brown Ritz is quoted in the caption. She even taped the paint information on it with its barcode.

In the comments, people applauded the idea and gave suggestions to make it even better. “How about writing the info on masking tape instead, so when you change your colors it's easier to update the info?” one person wrote. Another person shared that they always hang on to their sample cards but end up losing them, so this is the perfect hack to avoid that.

If you tend to be a bit forgetful, especially when it comes to figuring out where you put things, this hack is foolproof. It's also a considerate detail to leave for new owners should you move, making it easier for them to ID the paint in their new home. Win-win!
